Military misplaced priorities guarding disputed Abuja land — Sowore

Human rights activist and the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has condemned the recent altercation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and some military personnel who barred him from accessing a disputed parcel of land in Abuja.

PUNCH Online reports that in a viral video of the incident on Tuesday, Wike was seen expressing outrage at the officer’s presence, insisting that no individual, regardless of their military affiliation, was above the law.

The land in question is reportedly owned by a former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo (retd.), and the incident sparked public debate after a video showing the minister’s confrontation with the military personnel surfaced online.

Reacting to the development in a post on his X handle on Tuesday, Sowore criticised the military authorities, describing the situation as a reflection of misplaced priorities and entrenched self-interest among public officials.

Banks’ Capital Adequacy drops to 12% after forbearance withdrawal — CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has disclosed that the capital adequacy ratio (CAR) of the banking industry declined to 12 per cent in July 2025, following the withdrawal of regulatory forbearance earlier granted to banks.

Capital adequacy ratio measures the financial soundness and shock-absorbing capacity of banks by comparing their capital to risk-weighted assets.

A higher ratio indicates greater ability to absorb potential losses and protect depositors’ funds.

The CBN in its monthly economic report for July, said that the industry’s CAR dropped by 1.43 percentage points from the level recorded in the previous month.

The decline, according to the CBN, was largely due to the end of temporary relief measures that had earlier allowed banks to cushion the impact of macroeconomic headwinds on their balance sheets.

Despite the moderation, the CBN stressed that the ratio remained well above the 10 per cent regulatory threshold, a sign that the banking sector retained sufficient strength to absorb shocks from credit and market risks.

Meanwhile, street/parallel-market sellers in Lagos and other commercial hubs were typically selling dollars for about ₦1,455, with some outlets and data services reporting occasional trades up to ₦1,465.

Economy now predictable, stable, says Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima has said the era of volatility and unpredictability that once characterised the nation’s economy has ended.

He credited the ongoing reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for restoring stability and investor confidence.

Shettima spoke yesterday in Abuja at the opening of the Digital Nigeria International Conference and Exhibition.

The Vice President noted that the current administration has been compelled to take bold decisions in response to global economic uncertainties marked by “shocks, shifting alliances, and the rapid displacement of traditional jobs by emerging technologies”.

According to him, the reforms are yielding results, including the recent upgrades by global rating agencies, as indicators of the country’s improving economic track.
