The United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) opened its 6th plenary on Monday, 26th of February in Nairobi, Kenya.
Amongst which the body would discuss are environmental crises such as biodiversity, pollution etc, and how to fight against them.
Morroco’s Minister of Energy Transition, Leila Benali, is the president of this year’s assembly. She wants increased involvements, participation and cooperation in dedication against climate crisis
The president said the issue of the environmental crisis has been taken with levity for too long, and that no serious attempt has been made to tackle the issue, as the issue before now has only been tackled in bits. She said this is the first time the whole issue is being discussed with UNEP, as this move shows their concern on how it has been piece-mealed.
We usually find ourselves talking about climate, biodiversity loss, pollution and other environmental issues in different rooms,
Those rooms, we are tackling these issues in silos, while we are the same human beings, it’s the same nature, it’s the same environment and it’s the same planet
So we have, first time we discussed this with UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme), we said we are very much concerned about the fragmentation and the piecemealing of environmental issues in different houses.
Benali said
Resolutions on how to overcome storms, how to revitalized damaged lands and how to minimize the effects of metal and mineral mining would be brought forward by the 19 countries, as the assembly goes for what the 19 countries agree upon.
Proposals adopted lay the foundation and groundwork for countries to implement.
Over 7,000 people would be at the 5-day talks.
Governments endorsed 14 resolutions in the last meeting in 2022. Tackling of plastic pollution was among those 14 resolutions.
