South Sudan’s leaders face a UN Commission mandate to maintain the peace agreement for avoiding another fatal crisis.
The country’s unstable nature has become more concerning because of current events.
A United Nations helicopter received an attack within the Upper Nile state of South Sudan on March 7, 2025.
The attack victimized a personnel member who died while leaving two others seriously injured during this incident.
Government forces required evacuation through the helicopter while Nasir experienced increased fighting in the region.
According to South Sudanese President Salva Kiir several soldiers along with their commanding officer lost their lives during the assault.
The fighting between government forces and White Army units continues with violent attacks as both sides are thought to receive support from Vice President Riek Machar.
The ongoing violence endangers the 2018 peace agreement established by Kiir and Machar to stop the civil war which began in 2013.
South Sudan’s leaders has detained Petroleum Minister Puot Kang Chol together with several senior military officials who support First Vice President Riek Machar.
National forces clashed with the White Army militia in Nasir during recent heavy combat while the arrests were taking place.
This situation compromises the delicate peace agreement that established an end to the civil war between forces commanded by Machar and President Kiir loyalists.
The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) continuously supports peace agreement implementation while safeguarding civilians in the country.
Through United Nations Security Council Resolution 1996 UNMISS was established to deliver peace consolidation in South Sudan.
According to the UN Commission the present crisis demands immediate leadership action from South Sudan’s government.
South Sudan needs to maintain its peace agreement because failure to do so will trigger another deadly national crisis.
All parties receive continuous international observation as the international community requires both peace and stability from them.
