The Liberia Intellectual Property Office (LIPO) has organized its National Intellectual Property High School Club Competition for a second edition to close the intellectual property (IP) knowledge gap among Liberian youth.
Through this program LIPO instructs young creators so they become educated about IP rights together with methods to protect them.
The National Launch took place on March 13, 2025 with joint organization from the Ministries of Commerce and Industry and Education.
The competition this year reached 20 schools spanning Nimba and Grand Bassa along with Montserrado counties thus engaging 400 students together with 40 teachers.
Minister Samuel G. Toe served as the main speaker in his role as the Deputy Minister for Planning, Research, and Development at the Ministry of Education.
The official pointed out that establishing IP Clubs in high schools throughout the country would serve double purposes because the clubs both educate students on IP legislation.
They also teach them application skills for innovation and business creation and entrepreneurship.
During his address Hon. Garmai Korboi thanked public schools along with their students and sponsors for enabling the growth of the IP High School Club Competitions.
The initiative goes beyond education because it establishes a progressive investment for Liberia’s future through its development of knowledgeable and entrepreneurial young individuals.
The main objective of the IP Clubs functions as spaces which promote student learning about intellectual property value through interactive activities along with discussions and competitive events.
The effective management of these clubs will be achieved through a two-day basic training for 40 teachers which provides necessary intellectual property knowledge for club supervision.
The first National Intellectual Property High School Club Competition took place during November 2024 when five high schools took part.
William V. S. Tubman High School achieved victory in the competition which became a crucial step toward teaching IP education to Liberian schools while giving their students tools to protect their original creations.
LIPO demonstrates its dedication to developing innovative youth through the expanded competition framework of its second national intellectual property event.
LIPO uses education and practical training to equip students so that they can establish a powerful base for Liberia’s participation in the global knowledge economy.
