Kenyan legal delegation, including ex-CJ Mutunga, deported in Tanzania amid political tensions surrounding opposition leader Tundu Lissu’s trial.
Tanzanian authorities have deported former Kenyan Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, alongside activists Hanifa Adan and Hussein Khalid, after detaining them at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam.
Upon arrival, the group was held without explanation, with their passports confiscated.
Activist Hanifa Adan described the conditions of their detention as cold and uncomfortable, expressing frustration over the lack of information provided by authorities.
The trio had traveled to Tanzania to observe the court proceedings of opposition leader Tundu Lissu, who faces treason charges.
This incident follows the deportation of Kenyan politician Martha Karua and her colleagues, who were also denied entry into Tanzania under similar circumstances.
Kenyan officials have condemned these actions, urging Tanzania to uphold the principles of the East African Community, which advocate for free movement and cooperation among member states.
The Tanzanian government has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the detentions and deportations.
