Latif Abubakar condemns dull movie scripts and states that filmmakers in Ghana needed to move beyond love, crime and ritual stories.

The award-winning playwright feels that these recycled themes are killing creativity in the Ghana film industry.

Addressing a gathering in the industry, he had dared writers and filmmakers to make more daring and real stories.

Abubakar called on filmmakers to concentrate on culture, tradition, identity and the realities on a daily basis that depict contemporary Ghana.

According to him, people desire meaning rather than drama or shock on stage.

Observing that lazy scripting usually pursues attention but does not leave an impression, he added that it is always best to achieve that lasting impression.

Abubakar is the founder of theatre company, Globe Productions, that succeeds in mixing entertainment and social messages.

He thinks that the same can be done in the film industry in Ghana and attain international fame.

The industry, according to him, has to get out of the safe zone and take creative risks.

In the case of Abubakar, Ghanaian cinema needs stories that count, not worn out formulas.
