Nigeria is not only people inside Nigeria. Over 17 million Nigerians live abroad, doctors in the UK, engineers in the US, tech founders in Canada, traders in Ghana, nurses in Germany. One of the biggest, most talented diasporas in the world.
Every year, they send back over $20 billion — more than foreign aid, more than many states’ budgets combined. CBN data: $20.93 billion in 2024, $21.8 billion in 2025, projected $26 billion in 2026 — more than four times our Foreign Direct Investment. That is love. But love alone does not build a nation — structure must join it.
We lose a doctor here, we gain a doctor there. We call it Japa, but it should not be escape, it should be extension — Nigeria extending to the world.
- Our doctors are saving lives in London and Houston, but hospitals at home are empty.
- Our tech boys are building billion-dollar startups in the US, but there is no light here to run a laptop.
- Our professors teach in Ivy League, but our universities are on strike.
How do we turn brain drain to brain gain?
What Better Nigeria Diaspora Means:
- Vote must reach them: If you are Nigerian, you must be able to vote wherever you are. Diaspora voting has been debated for 20 years — bill pushed since 2012, rejected in March 2022 constitutional review, passed second reading November 2024 but stalled again. INEC says it is ready, but National Assembly must amend the Constitution. NIDCOM confirms it is unlikely for 2027, but advocacy continues. Your passport must work — renewal in 48 hours, not 6 months. CBN’s Non-Resident BVN launched to fix this.
- Investment without tears: One portal — invest, register company, buy land, track it on phone. No cousin will eat your money. Diaspora mortgage for house at home, diaspora bond with real interest. CBN now targets $1 billion monthly inflow by end of 2026.
- Knowledge transfer: Summer doctor programme — diaspora doctors come home 1 month every year to operate, teach. Tech diaspora runs remote mentorship for 100,000 Nigerian youths yearly.
- No shame, only home: Stop calling them unpatriotic. Japa is not betrayal, it is survival. Our job is to make home attractive enough to return, not to abuse them for leaving.
A Better Nigeria needs all its children — those at home and those abroad. We build together.
Your Task Today: If you are diaspora, share one skill you can teach or invest back home. If you are at home, tag a diaspora Nigerian who inspires you and thank them. Let’s reconnect.
