For decades, we have defined Nigeria by one word: Oil.

Oil built our budget. Oil caused our battles. Oil made us forget what else we have.

But the world no longer knows Nigeria because of oil. The world knows Nigeria because of its people.

When Burna Boy sells out Madison Square Garden, that is Nigeria.
When Nollywood produces hundreds of films annually and is watched in over 50 countries, that is Nigeria.
When the Super Falcons, D’Tigress, and Tobi Amusan mount the podium, that is Nigeria.

Our crude oil opened doors. Our talent opened hearts.

The Missed Opportunity

And yet, our national strategy is still stuck on crude.

We have no national sports infrastructure plan.
Our creative hubs survive on generators and personal debt, not power and policy.
Our athletes train abroad. Our musicians sign away their rights abroad. Our filmmakers borrow to produce.

We export talent raw and import it back refined.

A Better Nigeria Will Think Differently

A Better Nigeria will understand one simple economic truth: the creative and sports economy is not entertainment. It is industry. It is employment. It is influence.

Consider what is possible:

  1. Sports as Economy: Ten world-class zonal stadiums and academies would do more than host matches. They would create entire value chains — coaches, physiotherapists, kit makers, broadcasters, event managers, hoteliers. They would give millions of young people a reason to stay and train at home.
  2. Creative Economy as Jobs Without Government: Functional creative hubs in Lagos, Enugu, Jos, Kano, Benin, and Port Harcourt — with reliable electricity, high-speed internet, equipment grants, and intellectual property protection — would create more jobs in one year than many ministries have created in a decade. Music, film, fashion, comedy, gaming, content creation — these are jobs that do not need government employment. They only need government enablement.
  3. Soft Power as Respect: When your culture is loved, your passport is respected. Nations with strong soft power negotiate better, travel easier, and are listened to more. Afrobeats and Nollywood have given Nigeria more goodwill in the last ten years than diplomacy gave us in forty. It is time to invest deliberately in that goodwill.

The Shift

A Better Nigeria will not abandon oil, but it will no longer depend on it. It will refine its crude and refine its talent.

It will move from:
Oil-dependent to Talent-driven,
Raw export to Value addition,
Waiting for respect to Earning respect.

Our talent is not waiting for government. Government is waiting to catch up with our talent.

If you were given the resources to invest in one area of Nigeria’s soft power to change the country — sports, music, film, fashion, or arts — where would you begin and why?
