Every nation is a family of families. If the family is broken, the nation is broken. We cannot build a better Nigeria on top of broken homes, absent fathers, abused children, and lost values.
Check: When last did your street have families where children greet elders? Where father is home to teach homework? Where mother teaches honesty, not “hustle anyhow”?
A Better Nigeria starts in the parlour, not in Aso Rock.
What Better Nigeria Family Means:
- Present Parents: Father must be present, not only provider. Mother must be present, not only hustler. 1 hour daily with your children without phone — gist, homework, gist. Values are not taught in school alone, they are taught at home.
- Child Protection That Bites: No more “my pikin, I will beat him anyhow”. Child abuse, child labour in markets during school hours, child marriage — must stop. UNICEF Nigeria Child 2025 Report: 47% of children live below national poverty line, 25-31% aged 5-17 are in child labour, 1 in 3 girls married before 18, 6 in 10 children experience abuse, 23 million girls are child brides — highest in Africa, 3rd globally. LGA social workers must be active, schools must report, communities must protect. A child is not property.
- Values Re-Orientation: Honesty, hard work, respect, empathy. Not “sharp guy” culture. Every family must have 3 rules pasted on the wall: No lie, No steal, No bully. If every home teaches this, police work will reduce. Child Rights Act is now adopted by all 36 states (2024), but only 25 have gazetted it — enforcement remains weak.
- Support for Family: Cheaper crèches for working mothers, paternity leave for fathers, parenting classes for young couples in churches, mosques, community halls. Do not leave families to struggle alone. Only 2 in 5 under-5 children have birth registration — without identity, protection fails.
If we fix home, we fix street. If we fix street, we fix Nigeria.
Your Task Today: Go home early today. Sit with your children, spouse, siblings. Ask: What values do we have in this house? Teach one value today — honesty. Hug your child, pray with them. That is nation building.
