Celebrated Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has revealed that she welcomed twin boys in April 2024 through surrogacy. In a candid interview, she shared her reasons for choosing this path and the importance of breaking the silence around alternative routes to parenthood.

Adichie, known for her novels like Half of a Yellow Sun and Americanah, explained that she initially kept the birth private to protect her family’s privacy.

However, she later decided to share her story to challenge the stigma surrounding surrogacy, particularly within African societies. “I felt that there were many women who would then be pressured by people saying ‘look Chimamanda is 47 and she had kids at that age, what about you?'”

She emphasized that discussing such topics openly can help normalize various paths to parenthood and reduce the shame or fear associated with them. “My boys are so precious to me,” she said. “And I hated that anything about them would become politicised.”

Adichie also addressed the reactions to her revelation, stating that she has no regrets about her decision. “I have zero regret about surrogacy. My children are my precious gift.”

Adichie’s revelation comes alongside the release of her fourth novel, Dream Count, which delves into themes of womanhood, motherhood, and the immigrant experience.

Through both her literary work and personal narratives, Adichie continues to advocate for women’s rights and the importance of embracing diverse life choices.
