China aims for stable Vatican relations under Pope Leo XIV, signaling potential breakthrough in bilateral ties.

In a significant development for Catholic-Chinese relations, Chinese authorities have expressed willingness to strengthen dialogue with the Vatican under the newly elected Pope Leo XIV.

The Foreign Ministry’s statement comes amid cautious optimism about potential progress on several longstanding issues between the two states.

Government spokesperson Wang Li emphasized China’s commitment to “constructive engagement” with the Holy See, while reaffirming Beijing’s position on the independence of the state-sanctioned Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association.

The comments follow Pope Leo XIV’s first public address, where he signaled openness to “new pathways of understanding” with global powers

Observers note several key areas of potential cooperation:

  • Renewed negotiations on bishop appointments
  • Expanded cultural exchanges
  • Joint humanitarian initiatives
  • Possible papal visit to China

The relationship has seen gradual improvement since the 2018 provisional agreement on bishop nominations, though tensions persist over underground Catholic communities and religious freedom concerns.
