United Nations condemns in very strong terms what suspected Boko Haram attacked in Kukawa, Borno State killed at least 40 civilians with more threats still looming in the northeastern part of the country.
“The United Nations has strongly condemned a recent suspected Boko Haram attack that the group launched in Nigeria in its Borno State that left 40 civilians dead.”
UN humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Fall condemned the atrocities as he narrated the mass killing of fishermen and farmers in the Dumba community of Kukawa Local Government Area. ‘Several people are still unaccounted for after the attack happened on January 12,’ Fall said on Wednesday.
The UN official stressed the dire need to ensure that the culprits face justice by following the national and international human rights laws. He condoled the families of the deceased and wished the injured persons to recover expeditiously from their injuries.
Fall brought it to focus as “another grim reminder of the real faces civilians in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe continue to endure”, and also emphasised the increase in the rate of civilian targeted violence in 2024.
The statement outlined a year-long trend of violence where in February nearly seven hundred internally displaced persons were kidnapped in Ngala LGA; suicide bombers attacked Gwoza LGA in June, and farmers in the Firgi community were attacked by insurgents. For instance, more than 100 men and boys died in an attack on Mafa in Tarmuwa LGA, Yobe state in September, according to the report.
Further acts of violence were recorded in different towns of the North Eastern state particularly in Dikwa, Lokomane, Ngala, and Pulka of Borno State. They are the time when Fall demanded respect for the legal commitments of all combatants concerning the provision of protection to civilians under the IHL.
‘The UN is still dedicated to providing the affected communities with support in cooperation with the Nigerian government,’ Fall said while underlining the further provision of humanitarian aid in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states an addition to governmental actions due to the ongoing crisis of insurgency.
The recent attack and UN response reveal that security issues remain Hindrances to the northeastern part of Nigeria and the International contribution to the humanitarian crisis that continues to ravage the region.
