Super Eagles played a shocking 1-1 draw against Russia in a FIFA-defying friendly that drew global attention.

Super Eagles stunned football fans by holding Russia to a 1-1 draw in a controversial international friendly match.

The clash took place at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium on June 6, 2025.

Despite Russia being banned from FIFA and UEFA competitions since 2022, the game went on.

This was due to the match being unofficial and not sanctioned under competitive fixtures.

The Super Eagles became the first African team to face Russia since the global sporting sanctions.

The match marked their first-ever senior-level meeting.

The draw ended Russia’s impressive eight-match winning streak.

Coach Valery Karpin admitted Nigeria was a stronger team than other African sides they had played.

“Cameroon and Nigeria are significantly higher in level than Zambia and Kenya,” Karpin said post-match.

He added that Nigeria and Cameroon were more competitive and ‘interesting’ opponents.

Despite praising Nigeria’s athleticism, Karpin noted the Super Eagles failed to create many clear chances.

“They didn’t create threats for us, but we created moments,” he claimed.

The match attracted a huge audience despite Russia’s isolation from global football.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has remained silent about the game’s controversial nature.

However, critics argue that participating in the match undermines FIFA’s sanctions against Russia.

Analysts say the game helped Nigeria test new strategies and players ahead of major competitions.

It also signaled their bold approach to engaging in high-profile international friendlies.

Though not officially recognized by FIFA, the match was a major statement.

The Super Eagles proved they could compete on any stage — sanctioned or not.
