Utility Tariffs Squeeze Ghanaians — this sharp message came from Ghanaian civil society organisations (CSOs) on June 26.

Groups like CUTS International and CEMSE strongly criticised the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) for raising electricity tariffs by about 2.43%, effective July 1, 2025.

They argue this increase is unfair given recent economic improvements.

The CSOs highlighted that the Ghanaian cedi has gained over 30% in value recently. Inflation has also dropped.

Yet PURC still pushed for higher tariffs. They say this move breaks the PURC Act’s promise of fair, transparent pricing

They noted that consumers had already overpaid by nearly GHS 1 billion in past quarters. This surplus should have been used to avoid raising prices.

The groups also criticised PURC for including unexplained costs like arrears and reserve margins

CSOs demanded that PURC pause the hike and engage with stakeholders before any adjustments.

They stressed that tariff changes must reflect real economic trends, not vague or hidden costs.

By calling for transparency and open dialogue, these groups hope Utility Tariffs will finally align with fairness and improved service in Ghana. The coming weeks will show whether PURC listens.
