Ghanaian Afrofusion star Moliy has revealed her long-standing hesitation to sign with a record label, preferring creative independence over corporate backing.

She shared her unconventional career approach in a candid interview sparking industry conversations.

“I’ve always been hesitant to be on a record label,” Moliy confessed. “Artistic control matters more than advances.” Her stance defies industry norms where young artists typically seek label support for promotion and distribution.

Industry data shows Ghanaian independents earn 60-70% royalties versus 15-20% for signed artists. Yet most still chase label deals for perceived prestige.

Moliy’s approach mirrors global trends. Billboard reports 43% of 2024’s breakout acts were fully independent, up from 12% in 2019.

The singer acknowledges tradeoffs: “I work triple-hard on marketing, but sleep peacefully owning my art.” Her upcoming EP “Toxic Sweetness” will test this model’s viability at scale.
