Tempers flared in a tense executive Senate session on Wednesday evening when Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senate Leader Opeyemi  Bamidele nearly came to blows during a fierce argument over whether to adjourn for the upcoming recess or continue sitting this week.

The row erupted after Senator Ali Ndume criticised Akpabio for failing to convene a leadership meeting before the session, exposing deep divisions within the chamber. Ndume’s comments prompted Bamidele to openly challenge Akpabio’s leadership style.

“I am frustrated as Senate Leader working under Senate President Akpabio,” Bamidele reportedly declared. He accused Akpabio of being autocratic—holding meetings without consultation and sidelining colleagues. He added he was “contemplating resigning as Senate Leader.”

Akpabio, visibly angry, interrupted Bamidele, yelling: “Senator Opeyemi should sit down! He cannot speak while I am speaking. I am in charge here!” He reminded the Senate of his extensive leadership credentials, citing experience as Commissioner, Governor, and Senate Minority Leader.

As the exchange intensified, senators quickly intervened to prevent the dispute from turning physical. The chamber had narrowly avoided a full-blown altercation before order was restored.
