NAFDAC Lagos ₦1.5bn fake products seizure has made headlines after a major enforcement action at the Trade Fair Market in Lagos.

The raid, which took place in the cosmetics section of the market, led to the confiscation of unregistered, expired, and banned items estimated at over ₦1.5 billion in street value.

The operation was led by Dr. Martins Iluyomade, NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement. It forms part of the agency’s ongoing national campaign against the sale and distribution of hazardous and substandard products.

The team also intercepted a truck loaded with counterfeit NAFDAC-regulated goods, allegedly destined for markets outside Lagos

These products, many of which were visibly expired or labeled in foreign languages without registration numbers, were stored in bulk and openly marketed to unsuspecting consumers.

Laboratory tests reportedly confirmed the presence of dangerous chemicals in several of the seized items, some of which may pose cancer risks.

NAFDAC stated that owners of the warehouses have been summoned for questioning and may face prosecution under Nigeria’s food and drug safety laws.

The Lagos bust is part of NAFDAC’s broader National Action Plan (NAP 2.0), aimed at eliminating fake, substandard, and harmful products from Nigerian markets.
