Let us not deceive ourselves: All the grammar about economy, jobs, schools, hospitals, is zero if people are not safe to go to farm, go to market, go to school, sleep at night.
- Farmers cannot go to farms in Benue, Plateau, Zamfara, Niger, Kaduna, Katsina because of bandits — that is why food price is high. In some communities, bandits impose levies up to N20 million before farmers can access their own land. Over 460,000 people remain internally displaced in Benue alone. World Bank reports crop losses rose from 6% in 2018 to over 20% in 2024 due to insecurity.
- Kidnapping on roads — Lagos-Ibadan, Abuja-Kaduna — businessmen are afraid to travel.
- Oil theft in the Niger Delta — a security problem cutting our national income. Nigeria loses between 5% to 30% of crude production daily. NEITI reports 619 million barrels worth $46 billion (N16.25 trillion) stolen between 2009-2020. In 2022, as little as 30% of oil sent through pipelines reached terminals.
- Yahoo plus cult clashes — communities live in fear.
No investor will invest where it is not safe. No factory will run where trucks are hijacked. No tourist will come where kidnapping thrives.
Security is not only soldiers and guns. Security is a system.
What Better Nigeria Security Means:
- Community Policing is key: One policeman to 600 Nigerians will not work. Current strength is about 370,000 officers for over 200 million people — 1:600 against UN benchmark of 1:450. Over 100,000 are on VIP duties. We need State Policing + local vigilantes + traditional rulers working with formal police. The man who knows every street in his community must be part of security. IGP Committee now proposes shifting 60% of force (222,000 officers) to State Commands.
- Intel before gun: Security is information. If you see something, say something — with protection. Community must trust police to report. Police must not turn informant to victim.
- Pay and equip well: A hungry, underpaid officer with a 1970s rifle cannot fight an AK-47 bandit with morale. Welfare, insurance, modern tech, drones, body cams — not luxury, but necessity.
- Justice must be swift: If a criminal is arrested today and is back on the street tomorrow, community will lose hope. Fast-track courts for terrorism, banditry, kidnapping. Punish and also prevent — jobs for youth is security too.
- We all are security: Do not romanticize criminals online. Do not celebrate bandits with music videos. Do not share fake news that causes panic.
A safer Nigeria is not built by security forces alone — it is built by citizens and forces working together, united for peace.
