There has been a debate recently on whether the welcome signage at Kotoka international airport should ” oobake in the Ga language instead of the widely recognized Akwaaba in Akan’
This discussion comes after the wake of the welcome sign at Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum being changed from Akwaaba to Obaoke, following a strong advocacy particularly from the Gaa community
Those who support the change explain that since the Mausoleum is located in Ga land, it is appropriate to speak and reflect the indigenous language which is Obaoke
Also on the other hand, those who disagree believe that it should remain Akwaaba as it has become a national symbol of hospitality in Ghana and also transcends tribal lines
As this is ongoing, it has caused a lot of controversy, which has caused the celebrities to share their own views regarding the matter
Bella Mundi, popular TV personality, posted a Picture of herself dressed in Traditional Ga Attire, with a caption “
Imagining me welcoming you at the Airport with Oobake, it will be so beautiful, or I should go and sleep
This caption reflects her support for the use of the Obaoke welcome sign at Kotoka International Airport
DJ Slim thinks otherwise, as he was weighed in questioning the double standards of some Ghanians, in his tweet he said,
So the people filling for the report don’t have a Problem with ‘Welcome’, but they have a problem with the Twi word ‘Akwaaba’, wow I now understand why they say he be your own nigaas’ He stated
Pappy Kojo in his comic way added a humorous tweet to the controversy, saying
Oobake mihere bo, adding the video of his Hit track in Akwaaba featuring Mr Eazi and Patapaa
However, many social media users have shared their views and opinions, reflecting how Ghana is rooted in Cultures snd language
