During his determined State of the Nation address President Cyril Ramaphosa strongly opposed what he called escalating international confrontational behavior by condemning recent US funding cuts that threaten important healthcare initiatives in his country.

US President Donald Trump started a confrontation by temporarily blocking worldwide aid funding for 90 days thus severely affecting South African HIV/AIDS prevention programs. The HIV programs operated by South Africa benefit from 17% US funding to support millions of HIV-positive citizens across the nation.

The growing diplomatic dispute about South African land expropriation laws coincides with a freeze of American financial support. Under Trump’s view the law functioned as “a massive human rights violation” so he declared that he would pull out all money permanently from South Africa whenever the nation moves forward with its implementation. Ramaphosa vehemently denied these false allegations describing them as deliberately misinformed information.

South African health officials speed up their efforts to create backup plans which will sustain crucial HIV/AIDS service operations. The nation operates the biggest antiretroviral therapy program worldwide by offering treatment to the 5 million South Africans who have HIV.

The economic growth strategy of South African government received clear support from Ramaphosa during times of financial pressure. The plan presented by Ramaphosa consisted of a $50 billion infrastructure initiative to boost national economic growth while creating employment and upgrading transport together with energy systems.

The national development agenda faces no interference from outside forces according to the declaration of Ramaphosa. Nations must permanently close the practice of employing economic means to shape governments’ policy choices.

The president’s remarks demonstrate rising apprehension about applying foreign aid for political manipulation while showing Africa’s rising self-confidence during the international sphere. African leaders show support for South Africa because they see this situation testing the sovereignty of the continent.
