Agogo FPSO Embarks on Journey to Enhance Angola’s Offshore Oil Production

The Agogo FPSO unit departed from Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry shipyard in Shanghai, China on February 20, 2025 to transport itself toward Azule Energy’s Agogo Integrated West Hub Development Project in Block 15/06 offshore Angola.

A major offshore oil production advancement for Angola occurred after a ceremonial naming event and sail-away celebration.

Yinson Production secured the Agogo FPSO contract from Azule Energy which is a 50-50 joint venture of BP and Eni for $5.3 billion back in February 2023. The contract provides a base period spanning 15 years and includes an optional extension that can extend to five more years.

The FPSO has processing capacity for 120,000 barrels of daily oil throughput before it begins operations during the fourth quarter of 2025.

The Agogo FPSO stands out because it embeds leading-edge carbon-reduction systems. Major carbon emission reduction features of the FPSO include a closed flare system and hydrocarbon blanketing alongside combined cycle technology along with automated process controls and all-electric drive systems and a post-combustion carbon capture system serving as the first such system on an FPSO vessel.

These innovative technologies are anticipated to decrease carbon emissions by 27% overall which demonstrates a major advance in sustainable energy generation in Angola.

Building the Agogo FPSO required the active participation of international companies. Yinson Production awarded Blue Water Shipping a big logistics contract in March 2024 to handle all transportation of 15 topside modules for the FPSO.

The heaviest modules exceeded 3,211 metric tonnes as they moved from different origins including Chinese sites and overseas locations in Indonesia and Vietnam toward the assembly site in Shanghai.

The implementation of Agogo FPSO will lead to substantial growth in Angola’s current production levels of oil. Flemming Grønnegaard, Agogo FPSO’s Project Director declared that the Agogo FPSO represents a crucial industry transformation through its complete emission reduction features along with carbon capture elements which demonstrate the company’s commitment to lowering operational environmental impacts.

Angola’s energy sector receives enhanced strength from this development which supports worldwide initiatives aimed at making oil production more environmentally friendly.

The Agogo FPSO makes its voyage to Angola representing an advanced step forward in national offshore oil production which combines innovative technologies to fulfill energy needs alongside sustainable environmental practices.
