We are 18 years old.
The median age of Nigeria is 18.1 years. Seven out of ten Nigerians are under 30. While Europe is growing old and parts of Asia are shrinking, Nigeria is getting younger.
This is not a problem at all. This is our superpower.
Look at what our young people achieve with almost nothing. Afrobeats fill everywhere from Lagos to London, United States, Canada and so on. Paystack and Flutterwave, built by young Nigerians from Yaba, in Lagos, now move billions of dollars globally.
Nollywood, shot with small cameras and big dreams, produces over 2,500 films yearly, the second-largest film industry in the world by output, behind only Bollywood.
We gave the world music, film, fashion, and fintech. What did we give them at home? No stable electricity supply. No jobs. No structured support. So they carry the same talent and build economies in Canada, Dubai, the United Kingdom etc.
What if we built them HERE, in Nigeria?
What Better Nigeria Looks Like:
- Fund the Dream: A real youth enterprise fund – N500,000 to N5 million. No long grammar, no godfatherism. Just idea + mentor + bank account. It has been proven that this model works. For example, The Tony Elumelu Foundation.
- From Street to Stage: Build six world-class Creative Villages – one per geopolitical zone – with 24-hour electricity supply, high-speed internet, and professional sound and film studios. Support Nollywood, Afrobeats, comedy, content creation, and sports academies. We must export culture and creativity, not just crude oil.
When our youth win, Nigeria wins. It is that simple.
Your Action Today: Look around you. Tag one young Nigerian doing something amazing – a tailor in Aba, a DJ in Jos, a coder in Kaduna, a farmer in Kebbi. Post their work with #NaijaToTheWorld. Let us celebrate them before they japa.
We are not just the leaders of tomorrow. We are the energy of TODAY.
