Ghana’s transport fares will increase by 20% across the board, effective Friday, August 8, 2025, the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has confirmed.
The hike affects shared taxis, intra‑city “trotro” services, long‑distance buses, and commercial haulage vehicles
GRTCC General Secretary Emmanuel Ohene‑Yeboah cited rising operational costs as the main driver. He referenced a newly introduced GH₵1.00 per litre fuel levy, which pushed fuel prices up by approximately 8%, alongside persistently high spare‑parts and maintenance costs. Road deterioration also added to the burden
Despite a 15% fare reduction earlier in May, transport operators say financial realities have since worsened. Ohene‑Yeboah explained that the intended economic relief never materialized
The Council is urging both commuters and operators to cooperate fully during implementation. Transport unions were involved in reaching the fare decision
