Buhari laid to rest today at his Daura family compound, concluding Nigeria’s official mourning period. The former president was buried with full military honors in a private Islamic ceremony.

The solemn event saw Buhari laid to rest according to his final wishes – simply and without fanfare. Only 200 family members and close associates attended the 4pm interment.

President Tinubu led the dignitaries, including three African heads of state. The military contingent performed a 21-gun salute as the casket, draped in national colors, was lowered.

Daura residents observed the moment uniquely. “We stood silently in our doorways as the procession passed,” local teacher Aminu Bello recounted. Markets had closed since dawn.

The Federal Government declared a 7-day mourning period. Flags nationwide remain at half-mast until Friday. International tributes continue pouring in from the UN, AU, and Commonwealth.

Family spokesman Garba Shehu confirmed the burial followed strict Islamic rites within one day of death. “He wanted no monument, just prayers,” Shehu stated.

Security was tight but unobtrusive. Police reported no incidents as thousands respected the family’s privacy request.

With Buhari laid to rest, focus shifts to his legacy.
