TikTok deletes Nigerian videos in massive content moderation sweep. The platform removed 3.6 million clips from Nigerian users in Q2 2025 for policy violations.
The videos targeted:
- Hate speech (32%)
- Sexual content (28%)
- Dangerous challenges (19%)
- Copyright violations (21%)
Africa Policy Director Adeola Ogunlade explained: “We apply guidelines equally worldwide.” Nigerian creators received 421,000 appeals, with 38% restoration rate.
Content creators express frustration. “They banned my dance video for ‘provocative moves’,” Lagos influencer Bimpe Adeleke lamented. Others complain about inconsistent moderation.
Digital rights group Paradigm Initiative warns of cultural bias. “Algorithms misinterpret Nigerian expressions,” said program manager Sani Mohammed. They demand more African moderators.
The removals come as Nigeria’s TikTok usage grows. The platform now has 28 million active Nigerian users, ranking 3rd in Africa.
Government reaction remains muted. NCC spokesperson Ikechukwu Adinde stated: “We monitor all platforms’ compliance with Nigerian laws.”
TikTok plans Nigeria workshops to educate creators on policies. “We want to keep the platform safe,” Ogunlade added.
After this, creators must balance creativity with compliance. The platform’s transparency report shows Nigeria accounts for 11% of Africa’s removed content.
