President Tinubu leaves for Europe

President Bola Tinubu has flown out of Lagos to Europe. This is part of his end-of-year break ahead of his official visit to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Tinubu is scheduled to participate in the 2026 edition of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week Summit, following an invitation from the President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The summit is expected to hold in early January.

According to a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the weeklong event brings together leaders from government, business and civil society to advance global conversations on sustainable development.

The 2026 summit will be held under the theme,

‘The Nexus of Next: All Systems Go’, and will focus on connecting innovation, finance and people to drive sustainable growth.

Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria after the summit.Fuel price war’ll benefit Nigerians, says NNPCL chief

The Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Bayo Ojulari, on Sunday assured Nigerians that ongoing price competition in the downstream petroleum sector will ultimately benefit consumers.

He described current market tensions as a natural consequence of Nigeria’s transition from total import dependence to domestic refining.

“Where there is healthy competition, the buyers are the ultimate beneficiaries.

And I think for us, we need to keep our minds that the market will stabilise.

“After a while, there’ll be some tension, because we’re going through a major transition,” Ojulari told journalists after briefing President Bola Tinubu in Lagos.

According to PUNCH Online, the NNPCL boss made the remarks against the backdrop of an intense price war that has seen petrol prices crash from over N1,200 per litre in November 2024 to as low as N739 per litre at some retail outlets in December 2025, driven primarily by competition between Dangote Refinery, NNPCL and independent marketers.

Suspected thugs strip Obaseki’s cousin naked in Edo

Suspected thugs have stripped naked the Chief Executive Officer of Hosamudia Farm, Don Pedro Obaseki, in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

In a video circulating on the internet on Sunday, Obaseki was seen being attacked at Uwa Primary School, where he had gone to play football.

Obaseki, a cousin of former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, was reportedly taken to the palace and made to kneel at the gate of the Oba’s Palace.

The suspected thugs reportedly told palace guards that they had brought an Oghion (enemy) of the Oba.

Some palace chiefs, who addressed the suspected thugs in the Bini language, said the Oba was on his way to the Holy Arousa Cathedral for a thanksgiving service to mark the end of the Igue festival.

One of the chiefs said,

“Today is Thanksgiving Day at the Holy Arousa. We don’t want any trouble.

If there is anybody that counts himself as an enemy of the Oba, allow him and see how he will end up.

”The chiefs later took Obaseki inside the palace, despite protests from the suspected thugs.

Tambuwal condoles Sokoto community, urges calm after US strike

Former Governor of Sokoto State and Senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Tambuwal, has appealed to residents of Jabo District to remain calm and continue to support security agencies following the recent military operation against terrorists in the area.

Tambuwal made the call on Sunday during a visit to the community after reports of explosions linked to a coordinated operation by the Nigerian military and allied United States forces, which occurred between the night of December 25 and the early hours of December 26.

Describing the incident as unfortunate, the former governor expressed sympathy with affected residents and prayed that such occurrences would not be repeated.

“Whenever incidents like this happen, people naturally become worried and concerned.

Nine bandits, vigilante killed in Kano community attack

Nine bandits were reportedly killed during a heavy exchange of gunfire between the Nigerian military and criminals at Bakaji and Unguwar Garma in the Goron Dutse area of Shanono Local Government Area, Kano State.

One vigilante member was also killed, while another was wounded during the encounter.

The bandits, who stormed the area late on Saturday, engaged the troops in a gun duel that lasted several hours.

Chairman of the Shanono/Bagwai Community Security Forum, Yahya Bagobiri, confirmed the incident while speaking to newsmen on Sunday.

He said the bandits fled after heavy fire from the military, taking with them about 40 cows and six abducted persons.

“The military killed the bandits and recovered motorcycles, but the criminals sneaked back around 5 a.m.–6 a.m., opening heavy fire on the military, though they could not penetrate the area.

“Because they came in hundreds, they still abducted six persons and rustled 40 cows.

But thanks to the military, who returned heavy fire, killing nine of them, the bandits abandoned many motorcycles,” Bagobiri said

Nigerians pay cheapest domestic air fares in the world — Air Peace boss

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Air Peace, Allen Onyema, has said Nigerians are paying the cheapest domestic air fares in the world, even as local airlines implement significant price increases during the yuletide season.

Speaking in an interview with ARISE NEWS on Sunday, Onyema insisted that air travel within Nigeria remains cheaper than comparable routes abroad.

“Nigerians are flying the cheapest fares in the world, domestically. Generally, even this season, Nigerians are paying the cheapest.

And I’ll prove it to you now,” he said.

Onyema argued that one-hour flights outside Nigeria often cost more than $400, while similar routes within the country are still available for as low as N125,000, a disparity he said contributes to the high failure rate of Nigerian airlines.

During the interview, Onyema offered specific international comparisons to support his claims.

“One-hour flight costs over $400 out there. For a main cabin, it’s $459.

One way is $399 for two weeks’ time. Then maybe in the morning, in the afternoon, it’s about $400 and something. But the basics, $399, when you multiply that by N1,500, you’ll be getting over N600,000.

FG did not give Makinde N50bn, only N30bn was released – Aide

The Special Adviser on Media to Oyo State Governor, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, has dismissed claims by former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, that Governor Seyi Makinde received N50 billion from the Federal Government, describing the allegation as misleading and deliberately disingenuous.

Olanrewaju also denied insinuations that the governor deliberately remained silent over the alleged funds in order to stash the money to support a future presidential ambition.

According to him, Governor Makinde did not receive any such funds from the Federal Government, which, he said, explains why Fayose was unable to provide evidence of disbursement when challenged to do so.

NASS workers raise alarm over alleged federal character violations in staff appointments

Members of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), National Assembly Chapter, have raised concerns over alleged breaches of the Federal Character principle in the appointment of secretaries within the National Assembly.

In a letter dated December 22, 2025, addressed to the Chairman of the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC) and signed by branch chairman Sabiyyi Sunday, the association warned that continued disregard for constitutional provisions could spark discontent and industrial unrest.

A copy of the letter, seen by our correspondent, cited Section 14(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Federal Character Commission Act, Cap F7, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2024, which mandate equitable representation of Nigeria’s federating units in public service appointments.

Group urges Tinubu to strengthen support for indigenous pipeline security firms

The Ekpeye Oil and Gas Host Families Association (EOG), a Niger Delta pressure group, has called on President Bola Tinubu to sustain and expand federal support for pipeline surveillance contracts, including the allocation of oil blocks to indigenous security firms operating in Ekpeye land, Rivers State.

The group specifically appealed for oil blocks and operational licences to be awarded to Pipelines Infrastructure Nigeria Limited (PINL) and Tantita Security Services Limited, noting that such a move would enhance the companies’ positive impact on host communities.

The National Chairman of EOG, Comrade Chidi Dogoni, made the appeal during a one-day sensitisation programme in Ahoada East Local Government Area, according to a statement released in Abuja.
