Apple Inc. is currently working on developing the next network technology. The company wants its next line of devices in the future to have concrete support for the next network modem, the 6G technology.
The American company in the past had faced some issues regarding its attempt to develop its own 5G technology. Apple aims to stop relying on the giant chipset tech firm, Qualcomm for its modem supply.
Apple’s 5G Modem Development Challenges
One of the challenges Apple is facing is the implementation of millimetre-wave technology. Qualcomm 5G technology patent infringement is also another issue Apple is trying to avoid.
The challenges according to the report would not make Apple equip its future devices in 2025 with its in-house 5G technology. So, because of this, Apple renewed its contract with Qualcomm to supply them with chipset till 2026 when Apple’s 5G modem would be ready.
The 6G technology would be available to the public for use after the end of the current decade. Just like the 5G technology, it surfaced first in 2017 and finally rolled out on devices in 2019/2020.
According to Mark Gurman (Bloomberg’s writer), Apple is currently employing tech experts and engineers to build its in-house 6G cellular network technology.
Mark also stated in his POWER ON newsletter that Apple had posted a vacancy for a modem systems software architect in its WTE (Wireless Technologies and Ecosystems) team. The role of any employed modem systems software architect will be to develop the 6G technology reference architecture. The architect will also develop the reference with its prototype implementation.
Apple’s job listing says it needs engineers who will take on the development of their in-house next generation of cellular network technology to have at least 10 years of experience. They are also to have completed either a master’s or PhD degree in electrical engineering.
