ECG meter transfers are prohibited, confirmed Dr. Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, General Manager for External Communications at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

He stated that electricity meters are registered to fixed locations and cannot be moved without formal approval. Unauthorized transfers may result in legal consequences.

Dr. Ayiku emphasized that while meter transfers are strictly prohibited for immovable structures like residential buildings, exceptions exist for portable units such as containers or kiosks.

Even in those cases, transfers are only allowed within the same ECG district, and must be done by ECG-authorized personnel upon official request.

The agency warns that moving a meter without ECG sanction can lead to billing errors, service disruption, and possible criminal prosecution.

Dr. Ayiku also urged customers to report suspicious meter movements or irregularities via authorized channels, like ECG district offices or the official call centre line.

ECG’s move to enforce these regulations reflects efforts to maintain billing accuracy and ensure uninterrupted service.

If you’re moving house or altering your structure, it’s crucial to follow ECG’s formal process rather than transferring meters yourself.
