Egypt announces three major oil and gas discoveries, including massive Mediterranean gas find.
In a major development for the country’s energy sector, Egypt has announced three substantial new oil and gas discoveries across different regions.
The finds were made through collaborative efforts between the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum, international energy companies, and the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS).
The most significant discovery occurred in the Mediterranean Sea, where exploration uncovered an estimated 3.5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
Onshore discoveries in the Western Desert and Gulf of Suez regions yielded both crude oil and natural gas deposits, with preliminary estimates suggesting substantial commercial quantities.
Petroleum Minister Tarek El Molla stated these discoveries “reinforce Egypt’s position as a regional energy hub” and will contribute significantly to meeting domestic demand while maintaining export capabilities.
The finds come as Egypt works to maximize its energy resources ahead of hosting the COP28 climate summit later this year.
Energy analysts note the timing is particularly favorable as global demand shifts following recent geopolitical developments.
The discoveries are expected to attract additional foreign investment in Egypt’s hydrocarbon sector, with several international firms already expressing interest in new exploration agreements.
