Big win for Nigeria as she strengthens its maritime footprint globally.

Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), has been elected Vice-President for Africa of the International Association for Ports & Harbours (IAPH).

The appointment highlights Nigeria’s increasing relevance in international trade and port development.

The IAPH, a respected global network of port authorities and maritime stakeholders, plays a vital role in shaping policies that influence global shipping and port operations.

By securing this strategic position, Dr. Dantsoho is expected to represent African interests while also pushing forward Nigeria’s vision of becoming a regional maritime hub.

Analysts say his election could attract more international collaborations and investments into Nigeria’s port sector.

What Does This Mean For Nigeria Maritime Sector

This is a milestone that gives Nigeria stronger influence in decision-making processes that affect African trade routes, port modernization, and sustainability initiatives.

For the NPA, this victory comes at a time when Nigeria is investing heavily in modern port infrastructure and security upgrades to compete with other global shipping destinations.

It might also be an advantage in terms of international business where there are usually restrictions and barriers.

With Dantsoho’s new role, stakeholders expect increased cooperation across African ports, knowledge-sharing, and policies that will benefit not only Nigeria but the entire continent’s maritime economy.
