Kenya’s data protection landscape has expanded with the official opening of an ODPC regional office in Nyeri.

The new facility brings critical privacy services to central Kenya’s doorstep, enabling easier access for millions of residents and local businesses.

Data Commissioner Immaculate Kassait presided over the launch, highlighting the office’s dual role in enforcement and education.

“From this location, we’ll receive complaints, guide organizations on compliance, and empower citizens about their digital rights,” Kassait explained to attendees.

The Nyeri branch represents ODPC’s continued decentralization strategy, following earlier openings in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu.

This expansion comes amid rising data privacy awareness, with the commission reporting a 65% year-on-year increase in public inquiries.

Key services at the Nyeri office include complaint resolution mechanisms, compliance certification processing, and regular public workshops on data rights.

The location will also serve as a training hub for data protection officers across the region.

This strategic move aligns with Kenya’s digital economy ambitions, ensuring privacy protections keep pace with technological adoption.
Recent months have seen ODPC take stronger enforcement stances, including imposing fines totaling KSh 28 million in Q2 2025 for various violations.

With two additional regional offices planned before year-end, Kenya continues to set the continental standard for accessible data governance.

The Nyeri launch not only expands service access but signals growing institutional maturity in safeguarding citizens’ digital rights.
