A dramatic car crash in Nigeria with a severely damaged vehicle on the right, and a police car on the left, surrounded by onlookers.
The former two-time heavyweight champion was in the back of the car when it crashed into a stationary truck near a petrol station on the notoriously dangerous Lagos-Ibadan highway earlier today.
Joshua, whose parents are both Nigerian, is believed to still be receiving treatment for minor injuries, according to Ogun State Police.
A road safety official in Ogun told the BBC that five adult males – including Joshua and the two victims – were involved in the crash.
The Federal Road Safety Corps says the SUV involved was suspected to have been travelling “beyond control’.
They claim the car lost control during “an overtaking manoeuvre” before it crashed into the truck on the side of Lagos-Ibadan highway which is often described by local media as one of Nigeria’s deadliest roads.
Other reports say the boxer’s vehicle swerved into the truck after a tyre burst, according to The Times.Investigations are ongoing at this time.
Local police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi released a statement confirming the deaths of two of the men, reports local news outlet Punch.
His full update said: “Two [have] died, while Joshua and one other have been hospitalised and are receiving treatment at a hospital that would not be disclosed.
