Kwara massacre: UN condemns killings as Türkiye pledges support
President Bola Tinubu on Thursday held an emergency security meeting with the Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, as national and international outrage mounted over the massacre of residents in Kaiama Local Government Area of the state.
The meeting came as the United Nations and Türkiye condemned the killings, northern senators demanded a sweeping security overhaul, and the Inspector-General of Police ordered the deployment of tactical teams to the affected communities.

Electoral Act: Opposition pushes back as e-transmission faces firestorm
The Senate Minority Caucus clarified on Thursday that the Senate did not reject the electronic transmission of election results before the leadership passed the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, contrary to widespread media reports.
The clarification came barely 24 hours after the upper chamber came under fire on Wednesday following reports that lawmakers rejected proposals for the electronic transmission of election results and a 10-year ban on vote-buyers and other electoral offenders.
Shortly after the report went viral, Senate President Godswill Akpabio dismissed the claims as misleading.
Akpabio also maintained that lawmakers retained electronic transmission as provided under the 2022 Electoral Act, a distinction he said was necessary to avoid legal and operational ambiguities.

On Thursday, the caretaker committee, led by Abdulrahman Mohammed and caretaker secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, were invited for the quarterly meeting of the political parties with the Independent National Electoral Commission.

US President Donald Trump on Thursday acknowledged the presence of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu, as he spoke at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, DC, highlighting her faith leadership and role in religious life.
The annual event, attended by members of the US Congress, religious leaders and international guests, featured Trump recognising Tinubu in the audience as he addressed attendees on matters of faith and global religious freedom.

The British Pound Sterling (GBP) showed a downward adjustment against the Nigerian Naira during the Friday morning trading session on February 6, 2026.
As the final trading day of the week unfolds, the Naira has continued to assert its strength, pushing the Pound further away from the 2,000 threshold in both official and informal markets.
In the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM), the British Pound opened at 1,848.61 per Naira. Following the opening bell, the rate saw consistent movement, reaching a mid-morning high of 1,854.02.
This represents a significant appreciation for the Naira compared to rates seen earlier in the week.
Electoral Act Amendment: ‘We approved electronic transmission, not transfer’ – Sen Umeh clarifies
The senator representing Anambra Central, Victor Umeh, has said the Senate unanimously approved electronic transmission of election results in the proposed Electoral Act amendments, contrary to public reports suggesting that lawmakers only endorsed the “transfer” of results.
Umeh made the clarification on Thursday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, amid growing public outrage over the outcome of the Senate’s consideration of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.
He explained that the process that produced the amendment was lengthy and deliberate, involving multiple legislative stages and nationwide consultations.

The Nigerian Naira maintained its steady momentum against the United States Dollar as the first week of February 2026 drew to a close. Despite a slight intraday adjustment, the local currency has demonstrated significant resilience in the official window, underpinned by consistent Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) interventions and a transparent electronic trading framework.
In the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM), the Naira opened the session on Friday, February 6, with a strong showing at 1,367.10 per dollar.
As trading progressed through the morning, the rate experienced minor fluctuations, hitting a mid-morning average of 1,366.53.
February 2 sit-at-home was a one-off action – IPOB spokesman
After last week’s face – off between Governor Chukwuma Soludo and Onitsha traders over the weekly Monday sit at home, the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has clarified that the February 2 lockdown was a one off action in response to what it called the dictatorial posture of the Anambra governor.
In an interview with Saturday Vanguard, IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful, recalled that the weekly total lockdown of social and economic activities on Mondays started on August 9, 2021 in the South East region to demand the freedom of its incarcerated leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who was then in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS.
According to Powerful, because of its negative impact on the economy of Ndigbo, after a period of total compliance, Kanu, from detention, ordered its total cancellation.
Anti-Terror War: Ex-militant leader warns Dokubo, Gumi over reported arrival of U.S. troops in Nigeria
The Head of the Association of Urhobo Mayoral Family Crown (AUMFC), His Royal Highness Dr. Israel Agimor Eshanekpe, also known as Akpodoro, has cautioned former Niger Delta militant leader Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari and Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi over the reported arrival of American troops in Nigeria as part of bilateral efforts to combat terrorism.
Akpodoro, in a statement issued on Thursday by the Mayoral Palace in Ughelli, Delta State, said the presence of U.S. troops was in line with diplomatic agreements between Nigeria and the United States aimed at strengthening the country’s anti-terrorism campaign.
He recalled past comments attributed to both Dokubo-Asari and Sheikh Gumi concerning U.S. military involvement in Nigeria, noting that such statements had raised concerns about national security discourse.
Suspected bomb recovery: No policeman has visited our premises — Church chairman
Following the denial of the Abia State Police Command on the discovery of a suspected bomb at the United Evangelical Church, Ehere/Umuola, Ogbor Hill, Aba, the church has stated that no policeman has visited the church premises since the incident.
The Police, in a statement by the state Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, stated that no suspected explosive was discovered at the scene.
The PPRO explained that only an iron rod part was found in the area, stressing that the military only visited the church to ensure that its members complied with road construction work in the area.
However, the Board chairman of the church, Elder Ariomnwa Amadi, told Vanguard that he was surprised at the statement by the Police over the incident, wondering how they came up with such a statement, even when soldiers were invited to evacuate the suspected explosive.
