Senate reconvenes today as Electoral Act triggers uproar

The Senate will on Tuesday (today) hold an emergency plenary session amid rising national outrage over its handling of amendments to the Electoral Act, particularly the controversial decision to drop the clause mandating real-time electronic transmission of election results.

The extraordinary sitting, convened less than a week after the passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, 2026, comes as pressure mounts from civil society organisations, opposition figures, labour unions, professional bodies, regional leaders, and a swelling youth movement that has taken its anger to the gates of the National Assembly.

The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, is expected to preside over the plenary, which will be attended by the remaining 105 senators.

In the past six months, the Upper Chamber has lost two members — Senator Okechukwu Ezea of Enugu State and Senator Godiya Akwashiki of Nasarawa State — to death.

A third lawmaker, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, recently exited the chamber after being appointed an ambassador-designate by President Bola Tinubu.

The development has reduced the number of senators from 109 to 106.

Tinubu brokers peace as Fubara, Wike exit Villa together

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike departed the Presidential Villa in the same vehicle on Sunday night after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu, presidency officials familiar with the meeting confirmed to our correspondent.

According to the officials, although the two political rivals arrived separately, Fubara rode away with Wike after the President’s intervention.

They described it as a symbolic gesture signalling a possible end to their long-running political feud.“Two of them did not come together.

Fubara came first, then Wike came later. But at the end of the day, both of them left the Villa together in the same vehicle. Doesn’t that mean they both settled?” a source said.

Oyo princes launch court fight to preserve Alaafin’s supremacy

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has been summoned to appear in person or through legal representation in a suit instituted against him by some princes of Oyo at the Oyo State High Court sitting in Oyo town.

The claimants, Ladigbolu Adegboyega, Owoade Tesleem, Adeyemi Adesina and Adeyemi Adebayo, filed the suit marked HOY/18/2026, seeking several declaratory and injunctive reliefs against the monarch.

In the suit, the princes are asking the court to grant an order of perpetual injunction restraining the Alaafin, “either by himself, his servants, privies or any other person or persons whosoever,” from appearing at, attending, or continuing to attend occasions and functions which they claim are not befitting the status of a symbolic traditional head of the Yoruba race.

They also seek an order restraining the defendant from acting in any traditional or official capacity that would make him “subservient or inferior to any Oba in Yorubaland.”

Three children, two degrees: UNILAG couple beat odds to graduate

A couple, Mr Olawale Olulaja and his wife, Blessing Chigozie, were among the graduands at the just-concluded convocation of the University of Lagos, completing their programmes through the Distance Learning Institute.

While the husband was a graduate of Business Administration, the wife graduated from the Department of Accountancy for the 2024/2025 academic session.

The duo, in a conversation with The PUNCH, spoke about how they overcame the demands of marriage, parenthood, and years of academic disruptions, and graduated at the same time.

Olawale, a graduate of Business Administration, said he began the programme before his wife but could not complete it as scheduled due to outstanding courses.

18-year-old arrested for cutting husband’s manhood in Yobe

The Yobe State Police Command has arrested an 18-year-old housewife for allegedly mutilating her husband’s genitals with a sharp object during a domestic dispute in Potiskum Local Government Area of the state.

According to PUNCH Metro, the incident occurred on Friday, leaving the victim critically injured.

The command’s spokesperson, Dungus Abdulkarim, told PUNCH Metro in a telephone conversation that officers responded to a distress call and found the man lying in a pool of blood inside his room.

“On February 6, our policemen responded to a distress call that a man was found lying in his room in a pool of blood.

We rushed to the house and could not find anybody, so we immediately took him to a clinic for treatment and later referred him to the Azare Medical Centre for further treatment,” he said.

9 worshippers abducted during vigil in Benue Catholic Church

There is fear and mourning in Utonkon District of Ado Local Government Area of Benue State, after nine worshippers were abducted from St. John’s Catholic Church, Ojije, during a vigil in the early hours of Sunday.

This came as United States Representative Riley Moore, yesterday, called for prayers for the safe return of Fr. Nathaniel Asuwaye of Holy Trinity Parish in Kaduna, who was reportedly kidnapped alongside 10 others during a violent attack.

The Benue church victims, mostly women and youths, were reportedly taken about 2 a.m., while praying inside the church.

The incident has plunged the community into deep anxiety, with parents and children traumatised and daily life disrupted as fear grips farmers, traders and worshippers at the church, who were on a 30-day prayer meeting.

Army overruns terror camp in Kogi, rescues 14 victims

Troops of 12 Brigade Nigerian Army have rescued 14 kidnapped victims in Kogi following sustained offensive operations against terrorists within forest enclaves around Lokoja axis.

A credible military source told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Abuja on Tuesday that the rescue followed a successful assault on Batijjo’s camp in the Adonkolo/Kakanda Forest.

The source said that the troops engaged terrorists in a firefight and overran the camp, forcing the criminals to flee.

He said the troops recovered weapons, ammunition, military and police camouflage, and documents, including a foreign passport, during the operations, further degrading the terrorists’ operational capability.

No importation of finished PMS into Nigeria, Dangote Refinery clarifies

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has issued a firm clarification in response to recent publications attributed to S&P Global, stating that the reports misrepresent its operations and create a misleading picture of Nigeria’s refining landscape.

The company categorically refutes claims, amplified through certain newspaper adverts on Monday, February 9, 2026, suggesting that it imports finished Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) into the country.

According to Dangote Refinery, the misinformation was appropriately addressed during an S&P Global forum held today in the United Kingdom.

Following the clarification, the forum acknowledged the refinery’s pivotal role in reshaping the global refining landscape.

Electoral Act Amendment: Senate not averse to criticisms, will resolve issue today —Spokesman

The Senate, yesterday, said it is not opposed to public criticism and peaceful protests over its handling of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, assuring Nigerians that the controversy surrounding the removal of the phrase “real-time” from provisions on electronic transmission of election results will be addressed at an emergency plenary sitting today.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, spoke as hundreds of protesters besieged the National Assembly complex in Abuja, demanding that lawmakers explicitly provide for mandatory, real-time electronic transmission of results in the amended Electoral Act.

DSS takes over probe of attack, alleged abduction of Obaseki

THE last may not have been heard of the recent attack on media mogul, Don Pedro Obaseki over an alleged remarks about the Benin monarchy while in Europe as the Department of State Services, DSS, may have formally taken over the investigation into the attack.

Recall that Obaseki was attacked by some persons on December 28, 2025, as he was allegedly forced from where he was playing football with friends and marched through the streets to the palace before he was handed over to the police and subsequently released.

The indication that the DSS had taken over the case was from a statement by Obaseki’s counsel, Femi Falana, SAN, and made available to journalists in Benin City.
