Again, Tinubu wades into Wike-Fubara feud

There are indications that President Bola Tinubu has intervened in the ongoing feud between Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.Tinubu, according to a highly credible source, summoned Wike for a meeting over the Rivers crisis.

The source, who is close to the President, told Saturday PUNCH that the meeting would be held outside the country.

Our correspondents also gathered that Fubara flew out of the country on a private jet on Thursday with the plan of meeting Tinubu in France.

This comes amid a fresh impeachment process against Fubara and his Deputy, Ngozi Odu, by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly said to be loyal to Wike.

During plenary presided over by the Speaker of the Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, on Thursday, the Majority Leader, Major Jack, read out the notice of allegations and gross misconduct against Fubara.Consultant uncovers 8,452 ghost workers in Osun

Consultant uncovers 8,452 ghost workers in Osun

A forensic audit firm, SALLY TIBBOT Consulting Limited, has accused the Osun State Government of inserting a total of 8,452 alleged ghost workers into the state’s payroll and paying them a sum of N13,716,914,129.28 annually.

The allegation was made by the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the firm, Sa’adat Bakrin-Ottun, who spoke through the company’s legal counsel, Jiti Ogunye, at a press conference held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Secretariat in Lagos on Friday.

Bakrin-Ottun said the figures emerged from a comprehensive forensic audit and payroll validation exercise conducted for the Osun State Government, which, according to her, revealed pervasive payroll fraud within the state’s civil and public service system.

However, efforts to get the state government’s comments on the allegation were unsuccessful.

Tears as Nollywood bids farewell to actress Allwell Ademola

Nollywood stars gathered in their numbers to pay last respects to actress, producer and filmmaker, Allwell Ademola, who passed away on December 27, 2025, at the age of 49, after reportedly suffering a heart attack.Ademola was laid to rest at the Atan Cemetery in Yaba, Lagos in a sober ceremony that left many attendees emotional.

Her colleagues in attendance include Liz DaSilva, Rotimi Salami, Biola Adebayo, Saidi Balogun and Kunle Afod.

However, the funeral activities started on Thursday, January 8, 2026, with a “candlelight vigil” at the LTV 8 Complex in Ikeja, Lagos.

The event, which drew family, friends, colleagues and fans, served as a moment for reflection and remembrance of the actress’s remarkable career that spanned decades in both English and Yoruba movies.

Oyedele rebuts KPMG’s flagged ‘errors’ in gazetted tax laws

The Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, has clarified the policy intent behind Nigeria’s newly gazetted tax laws, following concerns raised by KPMG Nigeria, insisting that most issues highlighted by the firm were misunderstandings of policy objectives or disagreements with deliberate reform choices.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Oyedele said while some points raised by KPMG were useful, the bulk of the report mischaracterised the objectives and structure of the new tax framework.“

We welcome all perspectives that contribute to a shared understanding and successful implementation of the new tax laws,” the statement said, noting that “a few points raised by KPMG are useful, particularly where they relate to implementation risks and clerical or cross-referencing issues.”

However, the committee emphasised that “the majority of the publication reflected a misunderstanding of the policy intent, a mischaracterisation of deliberate policy choices, and, in several instances, repetitions and presentation of opinion and preferences as facts.”

Trump threatens more strikes in Nigeria

President Donald Trump has warned that the United States could launch additional military strikes in Nigeria if attacks on Christians persist.

Trump issued the warning during an interview with The New York Times (NYT), where he was asked whether the Christmas Day missile strikes against the Islamic State terror group signalled the start of a wider military campaign.

The strikes came roughly a month after Trump threatened to deploy US troops to Nigeria, saying they would go in “guns-a-blazing to wipe out the terrorists killing our cherished Christians,” amid repeated claims by some US politicians that Christians were being targeted for genocide in the West African country.

Atiku has been contesting presidency since my NYSC days—Baba-Ahmed

Vice-Presidential candidate of the Labour Party at the 2023 elections, Dr Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has expressed shock that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is still seeking Nigeria’s presidency in 2027.

Datti recalled that Atiku has been seeking to occupy the highest office in the land since his (Datti) National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) days.

Baba-Ahmed made the remark yesterday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief

He noted that the country needs a new generation of leaders, adding that many capable citizens are willing to address the country’s challenges but are discouraged by what he described as an expensive and difficult political system dominated by godfathers and unfulfilled promises.

According to him, “When I was doing my NYSC, Baba Atiku was an aspirant, and in 2018, we contested the primaries together.

In 2023, we contested again, with me as a vice-presidential candidate elsewhere, when his vice president had left him. And, for God’s sake, in 2027 again.

NNPP rejects court order reversing dissolution of Kano executives

A faction of the national secretariat of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) loyal to Rabiu Kwankwaso has rejected an ex parte order granted by a Kano State High Court reversing the dissolution of its executive committees in the state.

A statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary Ladipo Johnson, in Abuja described the purported order as “a farce” and an abuse of court process.

He said the NNPP National Working Committee (NWC) had not been served with any court process and therefore considers the reported ruling as “an ordinary street rumour.”

As a consequence of the deepening crisis over Governor Yusuf’s defection to APC, the former NNPP Chairman Hashimu Dungurawa –a pro-Kwankwaso was sacked at the prompting of the governor, who swiftly appointed Abdullahi Zubairu Abiya as replacement.

Abiya’s appointment was even backed by the court which affirmed the dismissal of the former chairman.

However, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party in its response, described Dungurawa’s removal as a nullity. It went on to dissolve the entire Kano party executives at the ward, local government and state levels indefinitely, saying the action was in line with the NNPP constitution.
