Media personality and activist DJ Switch has criticised First Lady Oluremi Tinubu following her remarks encouraging Nigerians to explore small-scale businesses such as selling akara, roasting corn and producing kuli-kuli.

Speaking in a recent video, the First Lady said the government was working to give citizens hope through grants and social intervention programmes, noting that starting businesses like akara and kuli-kuli production requires little capital.

She said the administration had also invested in several humanitarian causes, including tuberculosis treatment, breast cancer support and efforts to combat food malnutrition.

According to Oluremi Tinubu, her office has continued to provide scholarships, ICT training and other support programmes aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians.

“We’ve encouraged Nigerians as best as we could. What is within our hands, I have given and I keep giving,” she said.

The First Lady also urged Nigerians not to lose hope, stressing that President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” is designed to inspire optimism among citizens.

“We have to renew our hope and that’s how we renew our hope. We are a very proud nation,” she added.

Reacting to the comments, DJ Switch took to social media to express her displeasure, arguing that the government should focus on creating opportunities and infrastructure that can prepare citizens for a rapidly advancing technological world.

“With absolutely no due respect, Remi! Thunder fire you! While other nations are creating spaces and infrastructure to develop their people for this rapidly technologically advancing world, you want us to sell kuli kuli?” she wrote

The activist further criticised those supporting the First Lady’s remarks, adding, “I can’t express how much I despise you people.”

We're trying to give hope. To start akara business doesn't take too much money; to start roasting corn doesn't take much. We have encouraged Nigerians as best as we could. What is within our hands, I have given, and I keep giving."
