The NIMC waiver condition for date-of-birth corrections could help Nigerians save N28,574. The National Identity Management Commission has clarified who qualifies for the fee exemption.
According to officials, the NIMC waiver condition applies only to errors made by the commission during initial registration. Applicants must provide proof that the mistake originated from NIMC staff.
“System-generated errors will be corrected at no cost,” stated NIMC’s Director-General. However, self-reported errors or subsequent changes will still incur the full fee. The policy affects thousands of Nigerians who need date corrections annually.
To qualify, applicants must present their original enrollment documents. They also need biometric verification to confirm the error wasn’t self-inflicted. NIMC processed approximately 12,000 free corrections in the last quarter.
Some citizens have welcomed the clarification. “It’s good to know there’s a pathway for genuine mistakes,” said Abuja resident Femi Okafor.
The commission emphasized the need for accuracy during registration. Officials advise double-checking all personal details before submission to avoid future charges.
While the NIMC waiver condition offers relief to some, many may still pay the fee. The policy aims to balance customer service with fraud prevention in Nigeria’s identity management system.
NIMC encourages affected individuals to visit their offices for proper verification. More details about the waiver process are available on the commission’s official website.
