$3bn refinery fraud: N80bn found in sacked MD’s bank accounts.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has uncovered a staggering N80 billion in various bank accounts .

These accounts are linked to a former Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), as part of an ongoing investigation into a $3 billion fraud related to the Warri Refinery rehabilitation project.

The EFCC investigation discovered that the funds were illegally taken during the period when the dismissed MD managed the multi-billion-dollar Warri Refinery modernization project.

The investigation team discovered that stolen money went through several bank accounts operated under the names of fronts and dummy companies which demonstrated sophisticated methods used to divert public funds.

The EFCC investigates multiple senior NNPCL officials besides the ex-MD of the organization.

The EFCC continues its efforts to arrest more suspects while conducting operations to retrieve money that was stolen from the public.

Information from within the commission indicates that the fraud operation might encompass wider scope because officials remain active in locating remaining assets and all participants involved in the scheme.

The oil sector’s corruption problems became evident to all Nigerians through the extensive financial losses.

The Warri Refinery maintained an inactive status throughout the petroleum industry although significant funding targeted its reconstruction process.

The EFCC has declared its dedication to seek every person implicated in the fraud while promising to prosecute those who conducted bad governance of public funds.
