The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed an illegal herbal medicine production facility, Shifa’Unnur, located in Mararaba Jos, within Kaduna State’s Igabi Local Government Area.
The action, carried out on Friday, underscores ongoing efforts to protect public health.
The operation was led by Mr. Shamsuddeen Mani, NAFDAC’s Principal Regulatory Officer, who confirmed the facility lacked mandatory registration and failed to meet basic safety and hygiene standards.
He highlighted that several herbal concoctions being made were unapproved, raising serious questions about their safety, quality, and effectiveness.
As a result, products valued at ₦5 million were seized and slated for destruction. The facility has been sealed as NAFDAC continues its investigation.
In early June, the agency shut down seven unlicensed facilities including the Aji Garau Herbal Medicine Store, Al-Ihsan Bread Bakery, and five sachet water brands, for operating without certification or in unhygienic conditions.
Many were found displaying fraudulent NAFDAC numbers on their packaging, misleading consumers about product legitimacy.
NAFDAC’s Kaduna State Coordinator, Mr. Nasiru Mato, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to shutting down non-compliant operations and urged consumers to verify product legitimacy through official channels.
Shutting down unregulated facilities is crucial in preventing the distribution of potentially harmful products.
Herbal remedies can pose threats like organ damage, allergic reactions, or worse—particularly when produced with little oversight.
Meanwhile, the repeated misuse of NAFDAC registration numbers raises alarm about the growing sophistication of deceitful practices in product labeling.
These incidents emphasize the vital need for enforcement, public awareness, and vigilance in every step of the supply chain.
