Spotify DMs have arrived, putting the power to chat, share, and react within the app for music lovers worldwide.
Spotify recently rolled out a new Direct Messaging feature , dubbed “Messages” allowing users aged 16 and above to send private, text-based messages containing songs, albums, playlists, podcasts, or audiobooks directly to friends within the app.
How It Works
- Open the Now Playing screen and tap the share icon to start a message.
- Choose a friend; messages can be sent to those you’ve interacted with via Family/Duo plans, Jams, Blends, or shared playlists.
- Access Messages through the chat bubble on your profile.
- Enjoy features like text, emojis, message previews, and encryption in transit and at rest.
- Maintain control; users can accept or reject message requests, block or report accounts, or even opt out completely.
Spotify explained the move is based on user demand for “a dedicated space within the app to share songs, podcasts, or audiobooks”, fostering deeper connections and easier discovery.
The feature is not meant to replace existing sharing options, but to complement them.
Users seem to see the feature as an upgrade for social music experiences, though some users criticize it as unnecessary.
