The Nigerian Senate has passed a resolution classifying kidnapping as an act of terrorism, calling for amendments to the Terrorism Act to enable the harshest possible punishment.

During Wednesday’s plenary session, lawmakers unanimously agreed that any individual convicted of kidnapping should face the death penalty once the law is updated.

The Senate said the move was necessary due to the rising cases of abductions across the country and the urgent need for stronger deterrent measures.

In the resolution, the Senate declared:

“Upon conviction for kidnapping, the death penalty must be enforced.”

Lawmakers added that the decision is aimed at curbing the growing menace and sending a strong warning to those involved in kidnapping and related crimes.

Nigerians now await the formal amendment of the Terrorism Act, which will officially classify kidnapping as terrorism and enforce the death penalty for offenders.
