The sudden death of fast-rising Abuja singer Ifunanya Nwangene, popularly known as Nanyah, has sparked nationwide concern over snake bites in Nigeria.

The 26-year-old vocalist passed away at the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, on Saturday, January 31, after being bitten by a snake at her residence.

Following the incident, wildlife and snake expert, verified on X as @arojinle1, has shared important steps Nigerians should take if bitten by a snake to prevent serious injury or death.

Move Away Safely and Observe

The expert advised that the first thing to do after a snake bite is to move away carefully to avoid another bite.

He suggested trying to note the snake’s description if possible, as this information could be useful for medical treatment.

Stay Calm to Slow Venom Spread

Panic, the expert explained, can accelerate the heartbeat, which spreads venom faster.

He recommended sitting or lying down in a comfortable position and keeping the bitten area at or slightly below heart level.

Remove Tight Items Near the Bite

Rings, watches, bracelets, or tight clothing near the bite should be removed immediately.

Swelling often occurs after a snake bite, and removing tight items can prevent further complications.

Limit Physical Activity and Seek Help

The snake expert emphasized avoiding unnecessary movement.

If possible, call someone to take you to a hospital rather than driving or moving yourself.

Running or excessive movement increases heart rate and venom circulation.

Clean and Immobilize the Bite Area

While waiting for help, gently clean the bite with soap and water.

Immobilize the affected limb as much as possible to reduce venom spread.

Keeping the area still is critical while transporting the victim to a medical facility.

Get Medical Attention Immediately

The expert stressed that reaching a hospital quickly is the most important step.

Even if symptoms seem mild initially, serious complications can develop hours later, making prompt medical care essential.

Common Mistakes to Avoid After a Snake Bite

The expert also warned against several common but dangerous actions

Do not use a tourniquet; it can worsen tissue damage.

Avoid cutting the bite or attempting to suck out venom.

Do not apply ice or cold packs, as they can harm tissue.

Refrain from alcohol or caffeine, which may accelerate venom effects.

Only take painkillers if prescribed by a doctor, as some can increase bleeding.

The passing of Nanyah has left fans and fellow Nigerians in shock, highlighting the urgent need for awareness about snake bite first aid.
