The West African Examinations Council has announced a WAEC 32.72% pass rate in its latest examination results, while also withholding 7.5 per cent of candidates’ results over alleged malpractice.
According to the examination body, only 32.72 per cent of candidates obtained credits in key subjects, including English Language and Mathematics—figures that highlight ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s education sector.
WAEC disclosed that 7.5 per cent of the total results were withheld due to various forms of examination malpractice. These cases are currently under investigation, and affected candidates will be duly informed upon conclusion of the review process.
The council reiterated its commitment to maintaining the integrity of its examinations, warning that strict penalties would continue to be enforced against candidates found guilty of malpractice.
Education stakeholders have expressed concern over both the relatively low pass rate and the high number of withheld results, calling for urgent reforms to improve learning outcomes and strengthen examination monitoring systems.
The development underscores persistent issues in the education system, including inadequate preparation, examination misconduct, and the need for stronger institutional oversight.
