Nigeria suspends BEA scholarships for five years, citing cost and equity concerns; government redirects funds to bolster local education while ensuring existing scholars continue receiving support.

The Nigerian Federal Government established a five-year halt of the Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) scholarship scheme beginning immediately.

The government made this decision to support domestic education growth while fixing financial and equitable access problems in the program.

The Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa announced through research that every academic program which used to be studied abroad on BEA scholarships now exists and delivers superior education across Nigerian education institutions.

The government official stressed that public funds need to be managed responsibly together with investments into bettering local education standards.

The ministry of education implemented the scholarship stoppage because BEA scholarship beneficiaries dispute their unpaid education funds.

Scholars who belong to the Union of Nigerian Bilateral Education Agreement Scholars (UNBEAS) received reduced payments in 2024 before getting no compensation for the first four months of 2023 while the ministry states stipends have been paid up to December 2024.

The enforced suspension does not hinder families from using their own funds to send their children for overseas education.

Partner countries can offer entirely funded scholarships to the BEA if their offers eliminate student expenses and exclude requirements for Nigerian financial contributions.

Student beneficiaries who started under the BEA scholarship program will receive their full support benefits until they complete their studies.

The government maintains its commitment to sustain all present scholarship programs including those for public university students through Nigerian Scholarships and those for educational bursary programs and the Presidential NYSC Ex-Corps Scholarship.

The government shows its dedication to developing Nigeria’s educational structure as part of its approach to provide excellent education opportunities for all domestic residents.
