Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has issued a stark warning ahead of his death.

He urged Ghanaians not to politicise burials, saying: “Wear a party shirt to my funeral and you won’t return.”
He added that showing disrespect at a funeral will not bode well for anyone involved

Bagbin’s comments arose during a session addressing a concerning pattern. He noted that deceased Members of Parliament are increasingly being laid to rest as representatives of political parties rather than of the nation. “We must mourn them as fathers of the nation—not party tools,” he stressed.

The Speaker expressed deep frustration over the growing trend—especially during funeral services that were once solemn memorials. He emphasized that Ghana’s politicking should stop at party tents and flags, not at gravesides.

Social media reaction was swift. Many praised him, calling it a call for unity and dignity.
Some funerals have since seen attendees refrain from wearing political regalia.
