In response to rising concerns over gambling addiction among youth, Kenya’s BCLB has imposed a 30-day ban on all gambling advertisements, effective April 29, 2025.
The Kenyan government has implemented a comprehensive 30-day suspension on all gambling advertisements across various media platforms, effective April 29, 2025.
This decisive action by the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) aims to address the escalating concerns over gambling addiction, particularly among the youth.
Dr. Jane Mwikali Makau, Chairperson of the BCLB, highlighted the pervasive nature of gambling ads during peak viewing hours.
He stated, “Of particular concern is the rampant airing of gambling advertisements during the watershed period (5:00 am to 10:00 pm), thereby exposing vulnerable members of the population, particularly minors, who are gradually drawn into gambling-related addiction” .
The ban encompasses all forms of gambling promotions, including television, radio, social media, print, outdoor advertising, SMS, email campaigns, and influencer marketing.
During this period, all gambling advertisements must be submitted to the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) for examination and approval before dissemination .
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to foster responsible gambling practices and safeguard vulnerable populations from the adverse effects of gambling addiction.
