Manitoba government moves dozens from encampments to housing in new initiative.
The Manitoba government has successfully transitioned dozens of individuals from homeless encampments into stable housing as part of a new provincial initiative.
The program, which began last month, has already relocated over 60 people from Winnipeg encampments to safer accommodations, with plans to assist hundreds more in the coming weeks.
The housing placements include a mix of emergency shelters, transitional housing units, and permanent supportive housing facilities.
Social workers and outreach teams have been providing on-site support at encampments to connect individuals with appropriate housing options based on their specific needs.
“This is about more than just providing a roof – it’s about delivering the right supports to help people rebuild their lives,” said Manitoba Housing Minister Sarah Thompson.
The minister emphasized that the program combines housing with access to mental health services, addiction treatment, and employment assistance where needed.
The initiative comes as Winnipeg faces increasing pressure on its shelter system and growing visibility of encampments in urban areas.
Local advocates have welcomed the move while urging long-term solutions to the province’s affordable housing shortage.
