Moroccan police in Oued Zem thwart a major drug trafficking attempt, seizing nearly 4 tons of cannabis and arresting four suspects tied to an international smuggling ring.
Moroccan authorities have successfully intercepted a significant drug trafficking operation in Oued Zem, a city located approximately 156 kilometers from Rabat.
The operation led to the seizure of nearly 4 tons of cannabis and the arrest of four individuals suspected of being part of an international smuggling network.
The General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) conducted the operation based on intelligence reports indicating the movement of large quantities of narcotics intended for international distribution.
The suspects were apprehended while attempting to transport the cannabis, which was meticulously concealed to evade detection.
This seizure underscores Morocco’s ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and dismantle networks that exploit the country’s strategic location for illicit activities.
Despite the legalization of cannabis for medical and industrial purposes in 2021, recreational use and unregulated distribution remain illegal.
Morocco continues to be a significant player in the global cannabis market, with the northern Rif region being a primary cultivation area.
The government has been working to regulate the industry, aiming to transition from illicit production to a controlled legal framework that benefits the national economy while curbing illegal trade.
