London Mayor Sadiq Khan will visit Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa next month to strengthen economic and cultural ties.
The trip marks Khan’s first official visit to Africa since becoming mayor in 2016.
The tour aims to boost trade relationships between London and three of Africa’s largest economies. Khan will meet with government officials, business leaders and cultural figures in Lagos, Accra and Johannesburg.
“This visit is about building lasting partnerships,” Khan said. “Africa’s dynamic economies offer tremendous opportunities for collaboration in technology, creative industries and sustainable development.”
In Nigeria, discussions will focus on fintech and digital innovation. Ghana’s agenda includes creative economy partnerships, while South Africa will highlight green energy initiatives.
A delegation of UK business leaders will accompany Khan, exploring investment opportunities across sectors.
The visit comes as UK-Africa trade relations gain renewed focus post-Brexit. Last year, trade between the UK and the three nations totaled £14.7 billion.
Khan, whose parents immigrated to the UK from Pakistan, has emphasized the importance of international connections throughout his tenure. This trip continues his work building London’s global relationships.
The mayor’s itinerary includes meetings with young entrepreneurs and cultural exchanges. Officials say the visit could lead to new partnerships in education and professional training programs.
As African economies continue growing, Khan’s tour represents an important step in fostering mutually beneficial UK-Africa relationships.
