Lagos State has imposed movement restrictions as residents head to the polls for local government elections on Saturday.
The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) announced the measures to ensure security and order during voting.
Major Restrictions:
- No vehicular movement from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM
- Essential workers (INEC staff, security, media) exempted with valid IDs
- Markets & businesses near polling units ordered closed
Police Commissioner Adegoke Fayoade deployed 15,000 officers to maintain peace, warning troublemakers against vote disruption. “We will arrest anyone violating electoral laws,” he stated.
What Voters Should Know:
- 908 wards open from 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM
- PVCs required – No voting without valid cards
- Results expected by Sunday evening
LASIEC Chairman Justice Ayotunde Phillips assured adequate preparations, with materials distributed to all 20 LGAs and 37 LCDAs. Over 7 million registered voters are eligible.
The ruling APC faces strong opposition from PDP and Labour Party, particularly in:
- Alimosho (largest council)
- Surulere (recent by-election battleground)
- Eti-Osa (youth-dominated area)
Political analyst Jide Ojo noted: “These elections test grassroots strength ahead of 2027.” Past LG polls saw low turnout (18% in 2021), but heightened political tensions may drive more participation.
As voting proceeds under tight security, Lagosians hope for credible results that reflect their choices for local development.
